Introduction of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery

1.Basic information

The department of gastrointestinal surgery is the national key disciplines and was found on 2004. Under the leadership of Professor Hongbo Wei, the department has become an influential clinical department and research team in China combing the medical service, education and scientific research.

?

The gastrointestinal surgery department has one outpatient clinic and one inpatient ward. Around 2000 patients receive treatment while 1000 of those receive surgical treatment in the department. Among surgical patient, 100 of them receive laparoscopic gastric colon cancer surgery.

?

2. Clinical work

Our treatment covers gastrointestinal, anal, and pancreatic benign disease surgery. It also includes traditions and minimally invasive surgery for a variety of abdominal wall hernia diseases. We are the earliest clinical department in the Medical School of the Sun Yat-sen University to start the first laparoscopic gastric and colorectal cancer surgery. Until now, we have completed more than 500 cases of laparoscopic gastric and colorectal cancer surgeries, which have become the regular treatments in our department. Our surgical technical has received wide recognition from domestically and international colleagues. In recent year, we conduct research on how to protect the pelvic autonomic nerves,?the urinary function and sexual function for patients receiving open and laparoscopic radical surgery for lower colorectal cancer.

?

Our technique for preserving the pelvic autonomic nerves during laparoscopic surgery for lower colorectal cancer (laparoscopic pelvic autonomic nerve preservation, L-PANP) combines total mesorectal excision (TME) and pelvic autonomic nerve preservation, and the advantages of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. This surgical technique are not only widely recognized and promoted in China, we also received invitation to make a special report on the 2009 Asia-Pacific Conference on Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (the Congress of endoscopic & laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia, ELSA). The report is highly praised by experts from different country on the conference.

?

In recent year, based on the surgical technique for laparoscopic gastric and colorectal cancer surgeries, we developed some highly specialized surgical treatments, such as the laparoscopic total colectomy, laparoscopic gastrointestinal multiple carcinoma resection, and laparoscopic treatment for duodenal clogged. At the same time, we further increase our capacity to provide minimal invasive surgery, such as the laparoscopic appendectomy,?laparoscopic repair for gastric perforation, laparoscopic adhesiolysis?and laparoscopy exam. Now we own the best minimal invasive surgical technique in the world, which is also very famous in China.

?

We are the first clinical department which applies the PPH technique in treating the III, IV hemorrhoid in the southern China. It’s a fast, convenient, and almost painless surgical treatment without the need for hospitalization. We also set up an anorectal outpatient clinic to provide more quality medical service for patient with anorectal diseases.

3.?Teaching and Research

The department has 13 physicians, there is 1 postdoctoral student supervisor, 1 Associate Professor, 1 attending physicians and 1 residents. 12 students have received Ph.D degree or master?degree from the department; 8 students are currently enrolled in the master program, including 2 international students.

?

Our main research direction is gastrointestinal cancer minimally invasive surgery and molecular mechanism of the development of colorectal cancer. Our research results are published on domestically and international journals, including?Cell Mol Biol Lett, Chin Med J (Engl), World J Gastroenterol, Dig Surg, Surg Endosc, J Gastrointest Surg, Am J Surg.
