The department of laboratory medicine of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has an history of over 40 years since 1971. In recent years, with laboratory medicine developing rapidly, our department of laboratory has become more and more important in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Now, it has become a comprehensive laboratory integrating medical care, teaching and scientific research. The department consists of 16 professional laboratories, which are laboratory of Clinical Examination, laboratory of Biochemistry, laboratory of Microbiology, laboratory of Molecular Biology, laboratory of Immunology and laboratory of HIV Screening, etc.
The improvement of clinic inspection quality relies more and more on the advancement of testing techniques and the development of inspection apparatus. Our department has developed about 300 detection items and many special experiments, such as hormone levels determination, leukomonocyte sub-groups examination, thalassemia genes analysis, tumor marker detection, chromosome analysis and so on. Moreover, our department possesses a series of advanced automatic equipments, including the automatic hematology analyzer, the automatic biochemistry analyzer, the automatic
blood culture instrument, the special protein analyzer, the Time-resolved fluorescence immune analyzer, the flow cytometry, the automatic blood gas analyzer, the automatic coagulation analyzer, etc. These equipments made many high throughput detections possible.
The department is composed of 101 employees, including 8 physicians and 93 medical technicians. Among them, there are 18 people with senior professional title and 24 people with intermediate title. The educational background of the whole department is above college or professional school degree. In the department, there are 11 PhD, 22 masters, 44 undergraduate and 2 returnees after studying abroad. Our department receives a number of people from all over the country each year who come to the hospital for advanced study, and undertake the teaching of Medical School of Sun Yat-Sen University at the same time.
In the past five years, our department published hundreds of papers in core journals and SCI source journals, obtained 9 national level or ministerial level research grants, 9 provincial level research grants, one bureau level research grant, one award of scientific research at the provincial level and 3 national patents.
In order to ensure that the detection result can be sent to the
patients in time with accuracy and reliability, our department has established automation network system and Online Lab Information Query System. And thus the real-time sharing and inquiry of lab information can be performed. Meanwhile, our lab not only strictly carries out internal quality control for each test item every day, but also actively participates in the external quality assessment for clinical laboratories of Guangdong province, of our country, and of the world. For several consecutive years, we all get excellent results.
In a word, the staff of our department adheres to the people-orientated and patient-centered service principle, and provides all patients with high-quality medical care.
