Introduction

The department is one of the oldest ultrasound departments in Guangdong province. It’s now one of the provincial key clinical disciplines in Guangdong Province, offering Master’s and doctoral programs in ultrasound. We perform all kinds of ultrasound examinations, including abdominal, obstetric, cardiac, superficial organ, musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound intervention, etc. The department has 50 modern high-resolution real-time color doppler ultrasound machines. Our team has 69 staff, which includes 1 Professor, 3 Chief Physicians and 7 Associate Consultants. Among them, 2 are Ph.D supervisors and 4 are master supervisors. Until now, fifteen students received Ph.D degree while 24 students received master degree from our department.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our doctors perform more than 1000 ultrasound examinations everyday and at least 220,000 ultrasound examinations annually. Our characteristic technologies include:

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).?As one of?the first hospitals uses CEUS in Guangdong, more than 30,000 CEUS examinations were performed since 2004. Our department is an accredited national CEUS training base of Chinese Ultrasound Doctor Association. Since the utilization of CEUS, the diagnostic accuracy (especially in hepatic tumors, gynecological tumors and liver transplantation) has significantly improved to 90%.

Ultrasound guided ablation and efficiency evaluation.?The department performs more than 500 ablations annually, more than 95% of ablation procedure were successfully completed and only less than 0.5% of those have patients acquired complications. In order to improve the accuracy of ablation and efficiency evaluation of lesion, we incorporate a new technique – CT/MRI image, along with the conventional sonography.

3D/4D ultrasonography for diagnosis of fetal abnormalities.?More than 9,000 examinations are performed and around 50 fetal malformations are detected annually. The accuracy rate of the exam is almost 100%.

Research and Academic Activities
The department carries out both clinical and basic scientific researches. There are 11 projects receive grant from the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation and 35 receive grants from provincial and ministerial-level agencies. We published over 350 scientific papers, including 60 papers on SCI journals, and obtained 8 national invention patents. Our specialists are editors of more than 20 monographs. The department received 7 prizes from 7 Provincial Scientific and Technological Award.
