Research Interests

  • Liver failure

  • Antiviral therapy of chronic hepatitis B

  • Long-term standardized follow-up of hepatitis

  • Early diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

  • Cholestatic liver disease

Dr Chong's early work concentrates on comprehensive therapy of end-stage liver diseases (especially liver failure) and antiviral therapy post liver transplantation. He focuses on antiviral therapy and long-term standardized follow-up for chronic hepatitis B patients for the past 15 years. Recently, he paid more attention to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma. He and his colleague found a serum microRNA classifier could earlier diagnose or predict preclinical hepatocellular carcinoma, and published this finding on the journal of lancet oncology. Dr Chong is also interested in cholestatic liver disease, including primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC).
